Grand River Tailgate Lager

Brewery: Grand River Brewery (Ontario)

Type: German Pilsner

ABV: 4.5%

IBU: Unknown

Appearance / Aroma:  A cloudy appearance like a wheat beer.  Doesn’t smell like a wheat beer though.  Nice Golden Yellow colour. Minimal head but what is there is quite thin and gentle- almost no carbonation to look at.  It has a flat smell- borderline skunky.  No hops in the aroma.

Taste / Feel: The mouthfeel is very smooth, it laces the mouth with some creaminess.  It has a familiar flavour I can’t put my finger in, but in general it’s earthy- raisins, no citrus for sure, apricots?  Not sweet.  It’s a malty beer- but a bit bland and flat for my taste.  It’s like if you heard a song which started off with a verse and the chorus never comes- and it ends at 1:00.  I’m not sure why they didn’t write the chorus because the verse wasn’t all that good, and definitely doesn’t stand up on its own.

Yikes. It’s name kind of puts it into a category. That is, I wouldn’t turn to a beer meant meant for tailgating for an enriching experience. But, if that’s what they were going for, perhaps they nailed it! Then again, who would choose this beer over the much bigger competition like Coors or Molsen?

Would over those domestics, yes. However, at 3$ / can they aren’t really appealing to the buck a beer / labatts or molson crowd either.
